Chai Shots 006: The Signal Fire and The Missing Mechanics
Two concepts, two ends of the same story. IL-6 lights the fire. Endothelial progenitor cells are supposed to put it out. In South Asian cardiovascular disease, the fire burns hotter and the fire department is understaffed.
Cardiovascular disease is ultimately a balance between damage and repair. On the damage side, we have IL-6—the inflammatory cytokine that we described in Concept 4 as the "Signal Fire." South Asian bodies produce more of this inflammatory signal in response to metabolic stress.
On the repair side, we have endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs)—the body's built-in vascular repair crew. Concept 5, "The Missing Mechanics," highlights the research showing South Asians have significantly fewer circulating EPCs.
When you combine a hotter fire with an understaffed fire department, the resulting damage accumulates rapidly. This "Burn and Crash" explains why the first presentation of cardiovascular disease in South Asians often occurs a decade earlier than in Western populations.
