The Loaded Dice (Lp(a))
A lifelong lipid risk set at conception.
The idea
Lipoprotein(a) is a cholesterol particle whose level is set almost entirely by genetics, fixed at conception, indifferent to diet and exercise. Roughly one in four South Asians carries a high level, and because there are two billion of us, that is the largest affected group of humans on Earth, though not the highest per-person levels, which belong elsewhere. The clinical action is simple and rare in practice: measure it once in a lifetime. Loaded dice can still be played well, but only if you look at the roll.
