Adipokines and Cardiometabolic Risk in South Asian Americans: Findings from the MASALA Study.
In 891 MASALA participants, adiponectin was associated with lower odds of dyslipidemia overall and diabetes in women. Leptin and the adiponectin-to-leptin ratio did not show significant associations.
Keep in mind: The results are descriptive and sex-specific. They do not establish causation or a clinical treatment threshold for adipokines.

Among South Asian women in MASALA, two or more live births were associated with greater increases in blood pressure and LDL cholesterol over follow-up. Incident coronary calcium was not significantly associated with parity.
Keep in mind: The sample was relatively small and residual confounding remains possible. The findings do not establish that pregnancy caused these changes.

A 2026 analysis compared PREVENT risk estimates with coronary and thoracic aortic calcium in 960 MASALA participants. Associations differed by sex, with particular interest in aortic calcium among women.
Keep in mind: The study did not validate prediction of future clinical events; the authors call for further outcome studies.

The 2026 CHARISMA study found more visceral and liver fat and higher total and static insulin secretion in South Asian adolescents and young adults with elevated BMI compared with peers.
Keep in mind: This selected age and BMI group does not represent all South Asians. Higher secretion at this stage is not proof of inevitable future beta-cell failure.

A 2026 MASALA–MESA analysis found differences in cardiovascular risk-factor burden already at age 45. By age 55, South Asian adults had the highest estimated hazard probability of diabetes among the groups compared.
Keep in mind: These are group-level patterns from US cohorts, not an individual risk calculator or evidence of uniquely South Asian biology.
