The pathway to diabetes is DIFFERENT by ethnicity, even at the same disease stage: - **Nordic women**: Insulin resistance was primarily HEPATIC (liver-driven) - **South Asian women**: Insulin resistance was primarily ADIPOSE TISSUE-driven mRNA sequencing revealed INCREASED inflammatory gene expression in SA adipose tissue. A differential mitochondrial response was observed: TK2 (thymidine kinase 2, a mitochondrial enzyme) expression differed under hyperinsulinemic conditions between groups. Correlations between adiposity measures and insulin sensitivity DIFFERED BY ETHNICITY — the same body composition variables predicted metabolic health differently depending on ancestry.
